Big Eater

Last week the pediatrician gave us the go ahead to start letting Jonah try a variety of solid foods. We had been giving her rice cereal for almost a month and we thought that she'd "mastered" it. In other words, she swallows more than she spits out, she opens her mouth voluntarily to take bites, and she is interested in her spoon. So last night we all sat down to dinner—the same dinner—for the first time. The doctor said we could just blend up whatever we were eating (with some restrictions, of course) and give it a try. We had a grain salad with quinoa, butternut squash and leeks. And so did Jonie.

She wasn't too sure of it at first, but then she got into it. I think that grabbing the spoon and shoving it in is more important to her than the food she's getting. It was a great first try. When we let her have the spoon after she was done eating, she managed to make a good mess. We love it!

In other news, our big girl is rolling over—back to front and front to back!

She woke me up early this morning and while she is now back to sleep, I am still awake. We normally have family snug time in mom and dad's bed on weekend mornings, but this morning Anne is walking a half marathon and needs her rest. Tunesy and I will go cheer her at the finish and have a few photos to post tomorrow.

Wiley

This afternoon I left Jonie on the floor playing with her activity gym (odd name, right?) and went into the kitchen to make myself some lunch.
When I walked out of the kitchen—maybe 3 minutes later—she had managed to move herself down here.
Note that the blanket and gym have not moved. Just the baby. No explanation for this one.

Here are a few other gems from this afternoon.

And a few from last night's bath time.

I love this one.

Love that little butt.
We're calling this the Jonie pony.

Out of Wonder, Now Just Tired

Yes, we're tired. Anne clocked a 45 hour week in her first full week back at work. I gave a talk on campus, had one more full day of work, and lived it up with Jonie for three days. And now we're tired. We're trying to figure out how to manage all of these things and still see friends and try to exercise. And we've learned that trying to have a rational conversation about dealing with a crying baby at 4am after a long, long week just doesn't work for us. Right.

It is a good thing that Jonie is so freakin' cute. I mean, gimme a break.

wonder

I just put Jonie to bed for the night and am sitting peacefully next to Anne who is reading. This has been an incredible week. We're starting our "normal life" schedule and settling in to being parents and also people who are committed to our respective work lives. Jonie is really happy wither her two-day-a-week nanny time. When I dropped her off this morning she saw the nanny (her name is Seng) and gave her a big grin. What a wonderful feeling to leave her with someone with whom she feels so comfortable.
Our evenings are full of grins, too. Jonie sees us in the evening and is so happy. It just melts my heart. The thing I most wanted to say tonight is the Jonah is a wonder. What an amazing privilege it is to watch someone turn from a tiny baby into a little person. She is full of smiles and is learning so much every day. A wonder. We feel unendingly blessed. By her. By each other. By all of this.

Slackers

Jonie in the sweater and bonnet that her great grandma made for her

Ok, Ok. I was griping about all the mommy blog slackers (love you all) and how I have nothing to look at when eric indicated that we have not posted in a while.

Big things on our horizon: I am back at work tomorrow, Jonie has her second full day of care on Tuesday with Seng (she loves her), Jonah's tooth broke skin AND she is sleeping through the night while taking 2 hour+ naps (love her). That's about it for now, but stayed tune.
